A Unique in Vietnamese Coffee Experience: Salt Coffee

Salt coffee is a traditional Vietnamese coffee drink that is made with Robusta coffee beans, condensed milk, and salt. It is said to have originated in the ancient city of Hue, and is now enjoyed by people all over Vietnam.

There are a few different theories about how salt coffee came to be. One story says that a young fisherman’s wife accidentally added salt instead of sugar to his coffee one day. The fisherman didn’t want to upset his wife, so he pretended to enjoy the coffee. His wife was so happy that she had made her husband happy that she continued to serve him salt coffee every day.

Another theory is that salt coffee was originally created as a way to reduce the bitterness of Robusta coffee beans. Robusta beans are known for their strong, bitter flavor. When salt is added to coffee, it helps to balance out the bitterness and create a more mellow flavor.

No matter how it originated, salt coffee is now a popular drink in Vietnam. It is often served in small, traditional coffee shops called “quan ca phe” or at several coffee stands on the street. The coffee is typically brewed using a phin filter, and the salt is added to the coffee grounds before brewing. The condensed milk is added after the coffee is brewed.

Salt coffee has a unique flavor that is both salty and sweet. The salt helps to balance out the bitterness of the coffee, while the condensed milk adds sweetness. The result is a rich, flavorful coffee that is unlike anything else you’ll find.

If you’re looking for a unique and delicious Vietnamese coffee experience, be sure to try salt coffee. You won’t be disappointed!
