My son and I are Canadians who will be travelling in China before arriving in Vietnam. We don't know the exact date or how we will be arriving yet . It could be by train or plane and the border crossing is still to be determined. Do I need to know those things before I can apply for a visa?

Firstly, I would like to take a note that visa on arrival is just applicable if you travel to Vietnam by air. Visa applied at Vietnam Embassy is highly recommended if you enter Vietnam by train.

In regard to arrival date, you are not required to put exact date, it could be approximate date. But you need to make sure that you will not enter Vietnam earlier than arrival date stated in your visa.
